Paragon Tinker Tailor Series Mug by Louis Wain circa 1920 (Sold)

Stock No. 336

A scarce Paragon porcelain child's mug, hand painted in enamels, from the Tinker Tailor series introduced in 1918 and designed by Louis Wain.
The cup is decorated with an illustration of an anthropomorphic smiling cat in a traditional peasant smock and hat, ploughing a field with another cat in the background, holding what appears to be a rod and line, striding off to go fishing. This all is set amongst pastoral scenery with a cottage and windmill on the other side, and the legend above "The Happy Ploughboy", also marked below with the signature of Louis Wain.
Condition is excellent, with only minor wear and with no damage or restoration.
Interestingly we have a tea cup (item 227) with the same design but decorated slightly differently with the cats' smocks in different colours - again demonstrating that these pieces were individually hand decorated in coloured enamels after the outline transfer print had been applied and before firing in the kiln.
Marked to base with the Paragon Star mark and "PARAGON CHINA ENGLAND Tinker Tailor Series" and the hand painted pattern number 6069 in black with what appears to be the number 7 in black below that, also with a green "7" (probably the decorator's mark).

height : 2.6 inches

(Note: This extremely scarce pattern is not found in Gifts for Good Children by Maureen Batkin Part 2. pgs.7, 8, 14, 119 & 120)
