1920s Hilda Cowham Cake / Sandwich Plate for Shelley - Sold

Stock No. 396

An extremely scarce cake / sandwich plate designed by Hilda Cowham for her second series for Shelley in 1927 and bearing the pre - war Shelley backstamp and the registration number 731982. The strongly art deco design illustrates a boy and a girl riding their toy horses on wheels and with the rhyme "RIDE A COCK HORSE, TO BANBURY CROSS, AND IF WE'RE NOT CAREFUL, WE'LL BOTH GET A TOSS". Bears the facsimile signature of Hilda Cowham below the illustration of the boy.
This is the largest representation of this design on china (much smaller examples of this image found on cups, saucers and teaplates) and is in great condition with very little wear.
The back of the plate is stained in or under the glaze (front not affected) - and which can only have happened during manufacture - but does not obscure the printed mark for Shelley or the registered design number.
